Nufactor

Third-Party Assessment and Verification of Shipment Qualification for a Nationwide Specialty Pharmacy Network

Challenge

Nufactor is a specialty pharmacy that distributes refrigerated drug products nationwide, relying on a cold chain system that must consistently maintain 2–8 °C conditions. To ensure the reliability of its distribution network, Nufactor needed to verify that its shipping lanes, passive thermal packaging systems, and seasonal packouts were performing as intended.

While Nufactor had completed Performance Qualification (PQ) testing, the organization sought an independent third-party assessment to confirm that its distribution network operated in a controlled state across all routes, shipper sizes, and seasonal conditions. This included resolving inconsistencies in historical temperature data interpretation and ensuring alignment with industry-standard acceptance criteria for refrigerated drug products.

Objectives

  1. Review historical PQ shipment temperature data across all origin sites, seasons, and shipper sizes.
  2. Evaluate the performance of passive thermal shippers, including winter and summer PCM configurations.
  3. Apply refined acceptance criteria aligned with best practices for 2–8 °C distribution.
  4. Assess seasonal variability and lane-specific environmental challenges across the national network.
  5. Investigate shipments that appeared to exceed temperature limits and provide engineering justification.
  6. Confirm that all shipping lanes operate in a consistent state of control without additional qualification.
  7. Deliver a clear, regulatory-ready verification report supporting quality and compliance needs.

Results

Modality Solutions’ third-party assessment confirmed that Nufactor’s refrigerated distribution network operates in a controlled and reliable state. Across thirty PQ shipments evaluated, temperatures remained within acceptable ranges when assessed against refined acceptance criteria. Two initially flagged routes were successfully resolved through corrective actions and retesting.

The assessment demonstrated that all shipping lanes, shipper sizes, and seasonal packouts met performance expectations using validated thermal packaging. As a result, no additional qualification testing was required, and Nufactor gained strong, defensible documentation supporting the continued use of its nationwide cold chain distribution model.
